TIME has released the TIME100 AI 2026, its fourth annual list of the 100 most influential people in artificial intelligence.


The familiar names are present: Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Dario Amodei, Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison and Mira Murati.


But the real story lies beyond the billionaires building increasingly intelligent machines.


The list also includes Bernie Sanders, who says development of superintelligence should be stopped; AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler, representing workers confronting AI-driven automation; Joseph Gordon-Levitt, organizing creators around compensation, job protections and deepfake safeguards; Paris Hilton, campaigning against deepfakes; and Erin Brockovich, challenging the environmental and community impact of AI data centers.


Artificial intelligence has become influential enough that shaping its limits now makes someone influential in artificial intelligence.


TIME divided the list into Leaders, Innovators, Shapers and Thinkers.


Together, they reveal that the race has expanded far beyond Silicon Valley laboratories.


Executives from Broadcom, Amazon Web Services, CoreWeave and Micron appear alongside leaders from Huawei, Alibaba, ByteDance and SMIC.


AI may appear to live in the cloud, but the cloud requires chips, electricity, data centers and several billion dollars before breakfast.


The Innovators show where the technology is heading next: medicine, law, music, robotics, education and scientific discovery.


Ben Affleck appears for founding InterPositive, a company focused on using filmmakers’ own content to build AI tools for postproduction. Daniel Nadler is building OpenEvidence for doctors. Michael Truell’s Cursor is changing software development, while Mikey Shulman’s Suno generates music.


Hon Weng Chong’s Cortical Labs is developing biological computers that combine living neurons with silicon.


Apparently, ordinary artificial intelligence was not unsettling enough.


Someone decided to add living brain cells.


The list also reflects a global struggle.


Chinese researchers and executives are advancing chips, robotics, electric vehicles and frontier models. Indian honorees are building systems for healthcare, courts and the country’s enormous linguistic diversity.


This is no longer one race between OpenAI, Google and Anthropic.


It is several races occurring simultaneously:


  • America and China competing for technological leadership


  • Closed models competing with open systems


  • Workers negotiating the effects of automation


  • Creators fighting for ownership and compensation


  • Governments trying to regulate companies moving faster than laws can be written


Perhaps the most revealing selections are those protecting the information AI consumes.


New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger appears as his company battles AI firms over the use of journalism.


Wikimedia Foundation CEO Bernadette Meehan is defending Wikipedia’s human-created knowledge ecosystem as AI companies increasingly rely on information gathered from the open web.


The machines need human knowledge.


The humans would simply like a greater say in how it is used.

The TIME100 AI 2026 is a map of where power over artificial intelligence now resides.


That power belongs partly to the people creating the models.


But it also belongs to:
