It is quite a thing to tell the people managing the world’s economy that progress may soon move faster than they can follow.

At the IMF and World Bank’s annual meetings, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark did just that. He argued that the singularity, when AI drives discovery at a pace humans struggle to keep up with, has already begun. That is Clark’s assessment, and the scale of his claim deserves attention.

His vision includes human scientists directing a billion virtual researchers. Imagine multiplying the minds working on a disease, a battery or a scientific mystery, without waiting decades to train them. The promise is extraordinary. So is the responsibility.

One extreme Anthropic scenario puts U.S. GDP near $44 trillion by 2030, assuming highly capable AI spreads rapidly through the economy. It also projects severe disruption to knowledge workers’ jobs and wages. A country can become much richer while many of its citizens lose their footing.

Clark urged leaders to build the labs, robots and equipment needed to turn discoveries into useful things, and to establish human oversight while deliberate choices remain possible.

We have become rather good at teaching machines to think. Agreeing on what they should do remains a human problem.

❓ The Big Question About the Singularity

If intelligence becomes abundant, who decides what it serves?

⭐ Why It’s Important

Faster discovery could mean better medicines, more energy and longer lives. Whether those gains reach ordinary families depends on decisions about access, ownership, work and control.

Those choices deserve public attention now. Schools must consider what students will need. Employers must decide how workers share in productivity gains. Governments must prepare for change that could outrun their usual timelines.

The test is whether people live better, retain meaningful choices and share in the wealth they help create.

Intelligence may accelerate. Wisdom still takes work.
