📉 AI Product Failures: Even the Future Needs Customers

NewBits Digest feature image for article on AI product failures, highlighting shuttered AI startups, abandoned pilots, and the challenge of building lasting value.

A product can impress a room and still fail to earn a place in someone’s day.

TechCrunch’s growing list of AI product failures and disappointments includes Humane’s AI Pin, shuttered apps and startups squeezed as larger platforms absorb their features. Relay and Huxe both closed amid growing competition from larger platforms. The list also includes delayed launches and products folded into larger services, so every entry tells a different story.

Inside companies, the struggle continues. S&P Global’s 2025 research found that surveyed organizations abandoned an average of 46% of their AI proofs of concept before production. Cost, accuracy and trust remain significant obstacles.

The technology may be extraordinary. A useful product still needs to work reliably, justify its cost and give people a reason to return.

❓ The Big Question About AI Product Failures

Would anyone miss this product if it disappeared tomorrow?

⭐ Why It’s Important

Every new tool asks for more than a subscription. It asks for time, attention, data and changes to how people work.

Before building around one, test it on a real task. Count the time spent checking and fixing its output. Find out whether you can take your data elsewhere if the service closes.

For founders, the same test applies: solve a problem people care enough to keep paying for.

The launch gets the applause. Tuesday afternoon decides whether the product stays.
