🔎 Google AI Search Is Answering the Question and Keeping the Click

Google’s AI Overviews have arrived in France, placing generated answers prominently among—and often above—the familiar parade of blue links. Its conversational AI Mode goes further, allowing users to question Google as they would ChatGPT or Gemini.

For users, it is wonderfully efficient. For the websites supplying the information, it may be wonderfully fatal.

Traditional search operated as a bargain: publishers created useful content, Google organized it and users clicked through to the source. Google AI search can absorb information from multiple websites, compose the answer itself and often give users little reason to visit the people and organizations that produced the underlying information.

Google says the features continue to surface links and help users discover original sources. Publishers question how valuable those links remain when the answer has already been delivered.

🌐 How Google AI Search Could Reshape the Web

According to a January study cited by Le Monde, 37% of AI-assistant users already consider AI their primary method of searching online. The old competition was to rank first. The new competition may be to appear somewhere inside an answer that no one can fully see or audit.

That threatens more than website traffic. Fewer visits mean less advertising revenue, fewer subscriptions and weaker incentives to create the original reporting, expertise and analysis upon which AI answers depend.

The machine may not be killing the golden goose. It is simply answering the egg question itself.

⭐ Why It’s Important

Google AI search changes the basic economic bargain that helped build the modern web. Publishers invest in reporting, expertise and original content partly because search engines send readers back to their websites, where advertising, subscriptions and recognition can support that work.

When AI delivers the answer directly, users may benefit from greater speed and convenience—but the sources supplying the information receive fewer visits and fewer opportunities to earn revenue. Over time, that could weaken the incentive to produce the very material AI search depends upon.

The question is no longer simply whether Google can answer more efficiently. It is whether an AI-powered search system can continue consuming the open web without gradually undermining the ecosystem that keeps it informed.
