AI JUST LEARNED HOW TO USE THE MACHINES.
Anthropic has introduced the Anthropic Model Hardware Standard, or MHS, a new system designed to allow artificial intelligence agents to discover, understand and operate physical equipment, including microscopes, robotic arms, laboratory instruments and factory machinery.
Until now, connecting AI to specialized hardware often required engineers to spend weeks or even months writing custom software for individual machines. Under Anthropic’s new standard, equipment owners describe what a machine is, what it can do, how it should be operated and what safety limits apply. MHS converts that information into a standardized reference an AI agent can read.
Setup that once took weeks or months could reportedly take hours or even minutes.
We spent decades writing instruction manuals for humans. Now we are writing them for machines.
In one experiment, Claude was asked to align a laser. It initially had no specialized routine, so it experimented, observed the results and corrected itself through trial and error. It then turned what it learned into a deterministic script, allowing the alignment process to run automatically as a single command.
The machine did not merely follow a prewritten procedure. It learned the task and created a better way to perform it.
Anthropic is currently introducing MHS as a research preview and intends to release it as an open-source standard after additional testing and safety work. Tecan, QIAGEN and AWS are already participating, while Hugging Face is adding support through LeRobot and Raspberry Pi is working to enable MHS integration across a number of its products.
The ambition is to do for physical machines something similar to what Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol did for software: create a common language that allows AI agents to connect with tools without requiring every connection to be built from scratch.

⭐ Why the Anthropic Model Hardware Standard Is Important
Most artificial intelligence currently lives behind a screen. It analyzes information, creates content, writes software and makes recommendations. But the physical world remains fragmented across millions of machines, each with different controls, languages and operating procedures.
A common hardware standard could begin removing that barrier.
Scientists may eventually ask an AI agent to operate a microscope, conduct an experiment and analyze the results. Manufacturers could connect agents to production equipment without months of specialized integration. Small laboratories may gain automation capabilities once available only to the largest organizations.
The distance between intelligence and action is collapsing.
An AI that can use software is an assistant. An AI that can learn how to operate and coordinate physical machinery under appropriate human oversight is something considerably more powerful.
The opportunity is enormous.
So is the responsibility.
A chatbot mistake may produce a bad paragraph. A machine-control mistake can damage equipment, ruin an experiment or injure a person. Anthropic itself acknowledges that current AI systems still have limitations in physical and spatial reasoning, making expert oversight and safety controls essential.

Begin identifying which physical systems inside your organization could eventually become AI-operable. Document:
What each machine does
Who may control it
Which actions require human approval
How it can be stopped immediately
Every AI-connected machine should also have:
Strict permissions
Complete activity logs
Safe operating limits
A human-controlled emergency shutdown
The organizations that prepare their equipment and procedures now will be positioned to benefit first.
But speed cannot replace supervision.
When artificial intelligence moves from generating words to moving objects, safety is no longer a policy document.
It is a physical requirement.
