🔍 AI Safety Evaluators: Who Checks the People Building AI?

Trust is useful. An independent inspection is better.
As AI systems become more capable, small organizations such as METR, Apollo Research, and Transluce are taking on a larger responsibility as AI safety evaluators: testing what these systems can do, where safeguards fail, and what developers might have missed.
According to CNBC, Anthropic and OpenAI are moving toward embedding outside evaluators within their companies. Anthropic has already announced an embedded-evaluation partnership with Accenture, while OpenAI is pursuing arrangements with external safety assessors. These efforts could give reviewers closer access to the technology and the people building it. But important questions remain: Who pays them? What can they inspect? And can they publish findings their hosts would rather keep quiet?
Those details determine whether independence means anything. An evaluator needs enough access to discover problems, enough funding to investigate them, and enough protection to report unwelcome results. A desk inside the building is only a beginning.
⭐ Why Independent AI Safety Evaluators Are Important
As schools, businesses, and governments entrust more work to AI, they need evidence that safeguards hold up under pressure. Outside testing can help expose weaknesses before they become someone else’s problem. It cannot guarantee safety, but it can make promises harder to hide behind. The strongest oversight gives capable people both the freedom to ask difficult questions and the authority to make their answers heard.
❓ The Big Question
How independent is a watchdog if telling the truth could cost it its job?
