🎓 AI in Education: Florida Is Asking the Question Every School Will Soon Have to Answer
Florida is considering a new requirement for its 28-institution Florida College System: every college would need a policy governing the use and limitations of artificial intelligence.
That sounds bureaucratic.
It isn’t.
It is another sign that education is crossing a line.
For the first few years of generative AI, schools largely asked how to stop students from using it. Now Florida is moving toward a different question: how should students use it responsibly?
That is a very different conversation.
⭐ Why AI in Education Matters
There are legitimate concerns about AI in education.
Students can use AI to write essays, solve problems and complete assignments without understanding the work. Used badly, AI can become an extraordinary shortcut around learning.
But banning it creates another problem.
The world students are preparing to enter isn’t banning AI. Businesses are adopting it. Programmers are building with it. Scientists are researching with it. Doctors, lawyers, marketers, engineers and entrepreneurs are learning how to work alongside it.
Soon, asking someone to work without AI may sound a little like asking them to work without the internet.
So perhaps the educational challenge isn’t choosing between AI and no AI. It is teaching the difference between using AI to avoid thinking and using AI to think further.
That distinction is enormous.
A student who asks AI to do the assignment may learn less. A student who uses AI to challenge an idea, explain something differently, test an argument, explore possibilities or question an assumption may learn more.
The technology is the same.
The thinking is not.
Schools may therefore need to stop measuring AI literacy simply by whether students use it. We should be asking how they use it, why they use it and whether they remain capable of thinking without it.
Calculators didn’t eliminate mathematics. Google didn’t eliminate knowledge. AI should not eliminate thinking.
But that will only be true if we deliberately teach students how to remain the thinker.
The Essential Question
If Florida’s students will enter a world built around AI, should their education prepare them to avoid it — or teach them to master it without surrendering their ability to think?
