🧠 AI Detection Is Getting Harder — The “Six Fingers” Era Is Fading

Artificial intelligence is evolving so quickly that many of the visual clues people once relied on to identify AI-generated content are disappearing. According to Professor David Hughes of Teesside University, the common signs that once revealed AI images — such as distorted hands or extra fingers — are rapidly becoming less useful as generative models improve.
“The days of spotting AI by six fingers are going,” Hughes said, noting that the technology has advanced to the point where quality alone is no longer a reliable indicator of whether content is AI-generated.

As AI becomes more sophisticated, AI detection is no longer based mainly on visual inspection but increasingly on context and source analysis.
Instead of focusing on image imperfections, Hughes advises people to ask key questions:

📍 Is it from a trusted or accountable source?
📍 Is the content designed to provoke an emotional reaction or drive clicks?
If a piece of content appears engineered to trigger strong emotional responses or rapid engagement, it may warrant closer scrutiny. Trusted publishers and established platforms are more likely to be accountable for misinformation and to offer clearer ways to verify content.

While Hughes emphasized that people should not fear AI, he acknowledged that risks do exist, particularly in areas such as fraud, misinformation, and manipulated media.
As generative AI tools become easier to use and more realistic, bad actors may exploit them to produce convincing fake content, making digital literacy and critical thinking increasingly important.

Another concern raised by the public involves the environmental impact of AI. Large-scale AI systems require significant computing power, which in turn can consume large amounts of energy.
