💻 Agents as the Next Operating System — The Future of AI-Driven Computing

Anthropic’s Claude logo featured in NewBits Digest article on agents as the next operating system, highlighting Claude Sonnet 4.5 and AI-driven computing.

Anthropic’s new Claude Sonnet 4.5 may not just be another LLM — it might be the start of a new computing paradigm. At least, that’s what Ismael Faro, VP of Quantum and AI at IBM Research, believes:

“We’re witnessing a fundamental shift — from static applications to dynamic, self-modifying systems that blur the line between code and prompts.”

🧠 The Details

Anthropic’s latest coding model, Claude Sonnet 4.5, is being hailed as its strongest agent-building system yet, capable of using computers, writing code, and creating complex tools on the fly. Faro demonstrated how a single prompt could generate a custom team-management app built entirely by an AI agent, underscoring how quickly agents are learning to design and deploy working applications.

Faro compares the evolution of agents to a Unix-like architecture, where small, composable agents work together under a privileged “system layer.” In this vision, agents can build, adapt, and rebuild themselves to suit each user’s unique workflow — effectively replacing traditional applications.

The new model also represents a significant leap in performance. Claude Sonnet 4.5 solves 82% of SWE-bench coding tasks, up from 72% in the previous version, reflecting major advances in reasoning, tool use, and autonomous problem solving.

🧩 The Big Question

“Are we even going to need app stores in the future?” Faro asked. As agents begin to build apps instantly, the very idea of software distribution could change forever.

⚙️ Hardware Catches Up

As AI begins to generate software on demand, the next big question becomes: what does the new interface look like — voice, icons, or something ambient and invisible? Hardware makers are racing to find out.

Nothing recently launched Playground and Essential Apps for custom AI experiences, while OpenAI is collaborating with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom studio to design hardware tailored for the AI era. The lines between operating system, interface, and intelligence are quickly dissolving.

🌍 Why Agents as the Next Operating System Matters

The shift Faro describes could redefine computing itself, moving us from “apps that do things” to “agents that become things.” If agents can coordinate, build, and optimize across devices, they won’t just run on operating systems — they’ll become them. This marks a fundamental change in how humans interact with technology, where the system itself learns, adapts, and evolves alongside the user.

🧩 Key Takeaway

The rise of agents as the next operating system signals a turning point in digital evolution. As Claude Sonnet 4.5 and its successors advance, computing may no longer depend on static software layers — it will become dynamic, adaptive, and agent-driven.
