Despite having helped shape the deep learning revolution that made LLMs possible, LeCun is clear: today’s models are good at language, but lack real-world understanding.

While most of the AI world is pouring money and hype into LLMs, LeCun remains skeptical. Even Meta’s own models, like LLaMa, fall short in his view. He argues that they’re useful tools — but limited. They don’t comprehend the world. They don’t form plans. They just predict words.
His stance echoes longtime concerns in the field about “magical thinking” — the belief that excellent performance in narrow tasks means a model is intelligent. AI pioneer Rodney Brooks has warned against this assumption for decades.
