OpenAI has announced a major milestone in AI reasoning: its experimental general reasoning LLM has reportedly achieved gold-level performance on a benchmark modeled after the 2025 International Math Olympiad (IMO)—a feat long considered out of reach for AI.
Inside the OpenAI Math Olympiad Test
The company tested its model on the same problems used in the 2025 IMO, following the same strict rules as human competitors: no tools, no internet, and full natural language proofs required.
The AI scored 35 out of 42 points, solving 5 out of 6 problems—a score that would have secured a gold medal at the real competition.
Each solution was reviewed by three former IMO medalists, and final scores were only accepted if all three agreed.
OpenAI has not named the model and confirmed it remains experimental and unreleased.
Pushback on OpenAI Math Olympiad Test Results
Not everyone is on board. Google DeepMind challenged the announcement, noting that the IMO uses a private scoring scheme. Without official oversight, no gold-level claim can be fully verified.
Why the OpenAI Math Olympiad Test Matters
For decades, solving Olympiad-level math problems has been viewed as a holy grail for AI—demanding creativity, abstract reasoning, and complex proof-writing. If the results hold, this marks a breakthrough in general problem-solving AI with implications far beyond mathematics.
If verified, the OpenAI math olympiad test would mark a major leap forward in the field of general reasoning, showing that AI can approach human-level performance in abstract, competition-grade mathematics.
The achievement could open doors to future models capable of tackling advanced challenges in science, logic, and real-world reasoning—raising the stakes in the escalating AI race.
