🌙 OpenAI Dots Have an Overnight Shift

OpenAI’s new agents can keep working after you close your laptop.
At its September 29 DevDay, OpenAI introduced dots: personal AI agents powered by GPT-6 Astra, each with its own cloud computer and, according to OpenAI, access to more than 4,000 apps through its ecosystem. OpenAI dots can pursue assigned projects around the clock and can be reached through ChatGPT and, where enabled, Slack and Microsoft Teams.
Think research that progresses overnight. Launch materials revised as plans change. Work arriving ready for your review. OpenAI is betting that people will become comfortable giving AI ongoing responsibilities.
The economics are moving, too. The company also unveiled GPT-6.1 Sol, claiming performance approaching Astra on several evaluations at one-fifth its standard input and output prices. That could make ambitious automation more affordable.
⚠️ OpenAI Dots: The Reality Check
Always available doesn’t mean infallible. Live demonstrations hit snags. OpenAI says consequential work still needs review, and while conversations with a dot don’t count toward ChatGPT usage limits, tasks they initiate in Codex or ChatGPT Work do.
✨ Why OpenAI Dots Are Important
Our read: as AI takes on more execution, human judgment becomes more consequential. Defining the goal. Recognizing weak evidence. Knowing when the work is good enough—and when it needs another pass.
For students preparing for that world, clear thinking and the ability to evaluate an answer deserve as much attention as producing one.
❓ The Big Question
If AI can keep working while we sleep, will we use the time we gain to think more deeply—or simply expect everyone to produce more?
