OpenAI has unveiled 4o Image Generation (4o IG) — a powerful new multimodal image-generation system seamlessly integrated into its GPT-4o AI model. Now the default image generator in ChatGPT, 4o IG offers more precise prompt adherence, improved text rendering over DALL·E 3, and the ability to modify images based on ongoing chat context.
The feature is rolling out to ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users, with Enterprise and Education access coming soon. It’s also integrated into OpenAI’s Sora video-generation tool. OpenAI confirmed that when GPT-4.5 is selected, image generation still relies on the same 4o-based model used in GPT-4o.
Like its predecessor DALL-E 3, 4o IG is poised to spark widespread discussion around AI-powered media creation. What was once the domain of professional artists and science fiction is now accessible to anyone with a text prompt. Its release is expected to reignite debates on artistic ownership, copyright issues, and the evolving role of AI in the creative economy.
