🌕 China Open-Weight AI Model Kimi K3 Is the World’s Largest of Its Kind

Chinese AI company Moonshot AI has officially released the weights and technical report for Kimi K3, its 2.8-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model—and the largest open-weight AI system ever published. The model activates approximately 104 billion parameters for each token it processes.
Earlier this month, K3 rattled the frontier after approaching Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol across major benchmarks—and outperforming them on several individual tests. Now, anyone who accepts the license can download it, modify it and deploy it without waiting for an invitation from Silicon Valley.
“Anyone,” naturally, is doing heroic work in that sentence. The weights may be available, but running 2.8 trillion parameters requires the kind of GPU infrastructure unlikely to be hiding beneath your desk.
Moonshot also opened important parts of its technology stack, including attention kernels and agent infrastructure. Its license generally permits companies to host the model and sell access, although large Model-as-a-Service businesses and major commercial products face additional licensing and branding requirements. That turns K3 from an impressive research release into a potential commercial ecosystem.
🌐 Why the China Open-Weight AI Model Matters
The launch has also become geopolitical. U.S. officials accused Moonshot of using outputs from American models to help train K3, a practice known as distillation. Beijing rejected the allegations and accused Washington of “AI hegemonism.”
Apparently, even neural networks now require foreign-policy departments.
⭐ Why It’s Important
America’s leading laboratories still ration access to their strongest models through subscriptions, usage limits and carefully guarded APIs. Moonshot has placed the machinery of the China open-weight AI model on the table, giving developers far more freedom to inspect, modify and deploy the system than closed API access allows.
The immediate winners will be governments, research institutions and well-funded companies with serious computing power. The longer-term consequence is larger: frontier intelligence is beginning to escape the frontier laboratories.
The United States is still debating how to respond to China’s open-model strategy. Moonshot just shipped its argument—all 2.8 trillion parameters of it.
