China has officially launched the AI Agent Hospital, the world’s first fully AI-powered virtual healthcare system. Developed by Tsinghua University’s Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), the project opened to the public in April 2025 and is set to transform how clinical care is simulated, taught, and delivered at scale.
🧠 Inside China AI Agent Hospital: A Fully Simulated Medical System
At the core of the China AI Agent Hospital is a self-evolving, fully virtual environment where all roles—patients, doctors, and nurses—are powered by large language models (LLMs). These AI agents interact in continuous simulations of medical treatment cycles, from symptom onset to follow-up care.
The team’s custom training method, MedAgent-Zero, enables AI doctors to:
Engage in real-time conversations with virtual patients
Review medical literature
Accumulate experience from simulated diagnosis and treatment
🔍 Performance Benchmarks
The AI doctors have demonstrated strong capabilities:
88% accuracy in patient examination
95.6% in diagnosis
77.6% in treatment
The system also scored 93% on MedQA, a benchmark modeled after the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE).
📊 What’s Happening Now
The public pilot is being led by AIR’s spin-off startup, Tairex, with real-world applications already underway. The platform currently supports:
42 AI doctors
21 medical departments, including emergency, cardiology, and respiratory medicine
Planned expansions include:
Additional diseases and specialties
Dynamic patient records
Simulated AI doctor career progression
Evolving disease trend modeling
The hospital runs on ChatGPT-3.5 and GPT-4, with plans to integrate more advanced models going forward.
📈 China’s Expanding AI Healthcare Ecosystem
The China AI Agent Hospital is part of a broader movement in AI-driven healthcare innovation across China:
MedGo, developed by Tongji University, trained on 6,000 textbooks and now live in Shanghai East Hospital
CARES Copilot, developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, uses Meta’s Llama 2 for clinical support
🧭 Looking Ahead
The China AI Agent Hospital is more than a pilot—it’s a working model for the future of global healthcare. If proven scalable and reliable, it could help reduce physician shortages, improve diagnosis accuracy, and deliver expert-level virtual care to underserved populations.
