🚦 AI Traffic Lights Are Cutting Commute Times in Israel

Conventional traffic lights often follow schedules written in advance, obediently turning red even when no one is coming. Netivei Israel has decided that perhaps the machines should look out the window.


Netivei Israel has deployed approximately 170 AI traffic lights that use cameras to detect vehicles, measure queues and adjust signal timing in real time. In a study of 25 junctions, the system saved drivers an average of 25 seconds per vehicle. At one heavily traveled intersection, those seconds added up to 771 hours saved every day.


The technology’s economic impact may be even more impressive. Netivei Israel estimates that deploying adaptive systems at 100 junctions could contribute more than 500 million shekels to the economy each year.


Its goal is to convert all 750 junctions under its authority within five years and eventually coordinate entire routes, preventing one intelligent intersection from simply delivering drivers efficiently to the next traffic jam.


⭐ Why AI Traffic Lights Matter


This is AI at its most practical: no robot uprising, no philosophical crisis, just fewer people shouting at red lights.


Saving 25 seconds may sound trivial until it is multiplied by tens of thousands of vehicles, hundreds of intersections and 365 days. Netivei Israel estimates that saving ten minutes on each journey could return nearly two working weeks to the average driver every year.


For all the grand promises surrounding artificial intelligence, its greatest contribution may arrive in the smallest increments: a shorter line, a faster trip and a few more minutes of life returned to the people living it.
