Artificial intelligence is no longer just for tech giants—it’s helping older adults across Wisconsin. In Dunn County, the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) has launched an innovative pilot program using AI-powered robot companions to support seniors living alone.
At the heart of this initiative is ElliQ, a smart, voice-enabled companion designed specifically for older adults. Unlike Siri or Alexa, ElliQ engages in natural, ongoing conversation—making it more of a digital friend than a smart assistant.
👵 The Rise of AI-Powered Robot Companions for Senior Support
“We know that there is a caregiver shortage for older adults,” says Mary Linberg, a case worker at ADRC. “Anything we can do to keep seniors safe and healthy in their own homes, that’s where people really want to be.”
By offering companionship, medication reminders, and creative engagement, AI-powered robot companions like ElliQ are helping to bridge the gap between technology and human connection.
250 devices will be distributed over three years
52% of ElliQ use is for companionship—chatting, telling jokes, and sharing stories
Seniors interact with ElliQ an average of 14 times per day
🎨 More Than Just a Robot
ElliQ offers more than reminders—it’s a source of joy. Linberg shares:
“One of my favorite things is having her tell me a bad dad joke… You can paint, write poetry, play music—there are so many things she can do.”
Even for those skeptical about AI, ADRC is emphasizing safety and privacy:
HIPAA-compliant
No audio recording or data monitoring
Clear about being a robot—not a replacement for humans
💡 A Social Work Tool for the Future
“If you ever wanted to help people, figure out a way to integrate technology,” Linberg urges. This pilot is supported by a grant from the Inclusa Foundation, and early feedback suggests the program is already making a difference.
Participants receive ElliQ free for one year, with quarterly surveys to provide feedback. After that, users can choose to subscribe and keep ElliQ long-term.
📌 Who Qualifies for ElliQ?
60 years or older
Living alone
Internet access
Comfortable communicating in English
🧭 Looking Ahead
The pilot program in Wisconsin is a small but powerful example of how artificial intelligence can be used to enhance—not replace—human care. ElliQ’s early success shows that AI-powered robot companions can offer real emotional and practical value, especially for older adults living alone. As more communities explore this intersection of social work and technology, programs like this one could become a model for supporting aging populations with dignity, safety, and connection.
