🧬 AI-Designed Viruses: AI Just Invented 16 New Viruses

Researchers at Stanford and the Arc Institute just crossed a line that, until recently, belonged somewhere between Jurassic Park and a late-night conversation nobody wanted to take seriously: AI has designed complete, functioning viruses that do not exist in nature.


The results were published in Science, which is comforting—because nothing says “remain calm” quite like peer review.


🔬 The Details: AI-Designed Viruses

  • Researchers used the genomic language models Evo 1 and Evo 2, fine-tuning them on more than 14,000 Microviridae sequences related to Phi X174—a virus that infects E. coli rather than people.

  • The AI produced 285 proposed genomes. Scientists built and tested them and discovered that 16 became fully functioning viruses.

  • Some demonstrated higher fitness than the natural Phi X174 virus. The AI-designed viruses also differed substantially from known natural genomes, with one potentially different enough to qualify as an entirely new species. AI is no longer merely writing emails and making pictures—it is apparently creating some of biology’s strangest new relatives.


  • A cocktail of the AI-designed viruses destroyed E. coli that had become resistant to the original Phi X174 virus, demonstrating how engineered phages could potentially help overcome bacterial resistance and eventually contribute to new antimicrobial treatments.

  • For safety, viruses that infect eukaryotes—including humans, animals and plants—were excluded from Evo 2’s training data. The researchers also used non-pathogenic laboratory strains of E. coli. Sensible precautions were taken. History may now resume holding its breath.

⭐ Why It’s Important: AI-Designed Viruses Move Biology Into New Territory


This is about much more than creating 16 unusual bacteriophages. AI systems are beginning to move beyond analyzing biology or designing individual proteins and toward generating complete functional genomes that can be physically built and tested in the real world.


That could eventually lead to powerful new tools for combating bacterial infections, particularly as researchers search for alternatives to traditional antibiotics. But the same capability also raises obvious biosafety questions. As AI becomes better at designing biological systems that evolution never produced, the challenge will be ensuring that our ability to create them does not advance faster than our ability to understand and control them.


The bigger signal is that AI is no longer limited to generating digital content. It is beginning to design biological entities capable of functioning in the physical world—and that represents an entirely different level of capability.
