Artificial intelligence is making cybercrime faster, cheaper and significantly more convincing.


Cybercriminals can now use AI to research targets, identify vulnerabilities and create highly personalized phishing campaigns at extraordinary scale. One controlled study found that AI-generated spear-phishing emails achieved a 54% click-through rate—the same as messages created by human experts and dramatically above the 12% rate for generic phishing attempts.


The traditional warning signs are also becoming less reliable. Poor grammar, awkward language and suspicious formatting are being replaced by polished messages that can imitate executives, reference real projects and exploit established company procedures.


Deepfake audio and video raise the threat even further. In one widely reported attack, an employee made 15 transfers totaling approximately $25 million after participating in a video conference populated by AI-generated impersonations of company leaders and colleagues.


Although AI is strengthening cybersecurity defenses, it is simultaneously lowering the cost and expertise required to launch sophisticated attacks. One market forecast projects that the annual global cost of cybercrime could reach approximately $13.8 trillion by 2028.


AI cybercrime is therefore changing not only how attacks are carried out, but also who can launch them and how difficult they are to detect.


⭐ Why It’s Important


Cybersecurity can no longer depend primarily on employees recognizing a suspicious email.


When AI can convincingly reproduce a leader’s voice, appearance and communication style, even careful employees can be deceived. Organizations need stronger systems built around verification—not instinct.


High-risk actions such as payments, data transfers and account-access changes should require independent confirmation and multiple approvals. Employee training must reflect AI-generated threats, while companies should strengthen defensive technology, conduct realistic simulations and make cybersecurity a leadership-level responsibility.


The central question is no longer whether a message looks authentic.


It is whether the request has been independently verified.
