📱 Agentic AI Smartphone: China Debuts the World’s First Fully Autonomous Device

NewBits Digest feature image for article on the agentic AI smartphone, highlighting China’s debut of a fully autonomous mobile device.

China may have just taken another major leap in the global AI race. ZTE and ByteDance have unveiled a prototype smartphone—the Nubia M153—featuring the world’s first agentic AI smartphone system capable of operating the entire device like a human. Unlike Siri, Google Assistant, or even next-gen AI features from Apple and Samsung, this device runs an AI that sees the screen, taps buttons, fills forms, books services, makes payments, and even negotiates with other bots.

📌 Agentic AI Smartphone: Key Details

🤖 A True Full-Stack AI Agent

The smartphone uses ByteDance’s Doubao model plus an on-device agent that can:

  • Open and navigate any app

  • Fill in fields automatically

  • Make phone calls

  • Complete multi-step tasks

  • Identify locations, brands, and images

  • Interact with other bots (e.g., customer service AI)

In demos, the AI booked services, placed robotaxi rides, handled payments, updated destinations mid-trip, and even answered phone calls from automated systems.

📸 Human-Like Interaction

The AI “sees” the screen using a local vision model and interacts with UI elements exactly like a person would—tapping, scrolling, typing, selecting options, and confirming transactions.

🧠 Cloud + On-Device Hybrid Architecture

  • Doubao (cloud): understands intent, interprets images, plans tasks

  • On-device agent: controls the screen, executes actions, handles sensitive steps (e.g., passwords, payments)

This allows the agent to work both fast and privately.

🛠️ Hardware

Powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with 16GB RAM, built for running real-time vision and reasoning locally.

🤝 Agents Talking to Agents

In one demo, the AI placed a drone delivery order. When Meituan’s system called to confirm, Doubao negotiated with the bot on behalf of the user—a real example of autonomous agent-to-agent communication.

🌍 Why it’s important

This prototype is the clearest signal yet that agentic AI smartphone technology may emerge from China before Silicon Valley. While Western companies remain cautious and app-restricted, China is pushing ahead with OS-level AI agents that can act independently, navigate apps, and perform real-world tasks without human guidance.

If commercialized, phones like this could:

  • Collapse the need for traditional app interfaces

  • Shift smartphone competition toward AI autonomy

  • Accelerate agent-to-agent ecosystems (payments, bookings, services)

  • Pressure U.S. companies to rethink their slower, permission-based AI models

In short, this could be China’s second DeepSeek moment—a redefining move in the AI hardware and agent race.
